DARthroplasty is a procedure involving the reconstruction of the acetabulum of the hip joint using autograft bone fragments usually taken from the hip plate. The surgery is an alternative to a pelvic osteotomy (TPO) when degenerative changes occur in the joint or the patient's age/mass is advanced. The time required for the grafts to heal is about 6 weeks and cooperation with the owner is extremely important in order to limit movement as much as possible, especially for the first 3 weeks after surgery. DARthroplasty is a less aggressive and less restrictive procedure than a TPO osteotomy and can be performed simultaneously on both of the patient's joints.
This procedure enables joint function and reduces the suffering of the animal, it is not a procedure that leads to a permanent cure of a genetic, developmental condition.
